Legal obligation when driving with a MS…

Did you know that you must inform Service NSW that you have been diagnosed with MS?

No one tells you this when being diagnosed with MS, but it is a requirement that you must inform Service NSW of your diagnosis because being a neurological condition, your symptoms may impact your driving.

Don’t feel alarmed about this, you are not going to lose your independence or anything, they just want to make sure we are safe to drive, not only for ourselves, but also the other road uses.

Once you have let them know about your MS, they will more than likely send you a request to get a fitness to drive signed off on. For this, you will need to book an appointment with your GP or Specialist. Service NSW used to send out forms, but now it is all done online. Make sure when booking your appointment, you tell them what the appointment is for, so they allow enough time to get everything done.

So many MS’ers have no idea that this is even a thing, but, I can't express enough how important it is to disclose your diagnosis to Service NSW because in the event of an accident, it is possible that you could be found at fault because you may be deemed as ‘not competent’ all because your GP hasn’t medically cleared you to drive. It really is not worth it, and it can affect your cover.
