"Essential Emergency Preparedness Tips for Those Living with MS"

Getting Ready for Fire Season….

As you may be aware after all the rain La Niña brought us, El Niño is set to come our way meaning a hot dry summer.

For some of us, either newly diagnosed or new to the coast, might not realise what this might mean for you. The heat can really upset our MS and add to the stress of a fire in your area. Well, I’d like to give a few handy tips!

In case you don’t know me, I’m also heavily involved with the catering unit of Gosford RFS.

Download Hazards Near Me. It is a fabulous resource for not only fires but any problems with flooding or storms. BOM is also a great resource. Clean your gutters and trim trees. Now I know this can be difficult, and if you are a NDIS participant, this can be covered.

If you receive a My Aged Care Package, this may be covered. For others if renting you should talk to your agent or Landlord. For homeowners calling up most handymen services and asking for a quote. It is also worth calling your local RFS Brigade.

Think about what you would do if you needed to evacuate. It’s better to be prepared and have copies of important papers, insurance, I.D. Etc.

Have you got photos on a separate hard drive or on memory storage devices?

Would you need medication and scripts? Phone and tablet chargers.

Clothes for changes as well as pads, pants etc.

If you use a power chair or scooter, is it charged and don’t forget the charger.

If you have children, their clothes, and a favourite toy.

If you have pets think about how you will take them and what you need for them.

Do you have a plan of where you would go?

Do you or your family require any special foods, or have you got dietary requirement that you need with you?

I know it is a lot to think about but it’s necessary. I don’t mean to scare people, just make you aware and think about this upcoming Fire Season. Now is the time to act and plan what’s right for you and your family.

NSW RFS has some great resources, so I recommend tapping into them on Facebook or in person.
